Athletics Tauranga Inc.

Joining Athletics Tauranga is more than just becoming part of a sports club—it’s stepping into a community that celebrates fitness, friendship, and achievement. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or someone simply looking to stay active, Athletics Tauranga offers a welcoming environment where every member is encouraged to reach their personal best. With supportive teammates and regular events you’ll find the motivation and guidance you need to grow in your athletic journey. Our home is the Tauranga Domain in the city centre area, complete with all weather track and clubrooms.

One of the greatest benefits of joining Athletics Tauranga is the variety of opportunities available. From track and field to road running and cross-country, the club caters to all ages and abilities. Juniors can discover the joy of athletics in a safe, fun setting, while adults can challenge themselves in competitive events or enjoy recreational running with like-minded people. The club also provides pathways for athletes who aspire to compete at regional, national, or even international levels, ensuring that talent is nurtured and celebrated. Current Olympian Sam Tanner, many national champions and representatives call Athletics Tauranga their club. Last year nearly a dozen of our members were selected by Athletics New Zealand to represent our country at a range of international events. Multiple athletes have gained scholarships to universities in USA.

Athletics Tauranga is affiliated to AthleticsNZ and the Waikato Bay of Plenty Centre. Being a fully registered member is essential if you want to compete in interclub and national events. Registration means your times/heights/distances will be formally recorded and recognised nationally and internationally. Approximately half of your registration fee is passed on the Centre or AthleticsNZ to support the sport, develop coaches and officials and club activities. We also have opportunities for people to be involved at a social level, if it is just club nights and runs that you are interested in. The club is run by a hard-working committee that volunteers many hours to organise our 3 key events – Tauranga Twilight, King and Queen of the Mountain and the Tauranga Open Cross Country as well as regular club events. The club offers financial support to members selected to compete in national or international events, subject to criteria (See Members - Subsidies).

Coaching advice is available to youth competing on club nights and a list of accredited coaches is on our website. You can contact these coaches directly or via the coaching co-ordinator. These coaches work on an independent professional basis and will be able to tell you about their training times and fees. There are currently no volunteer coaches at the club. The club runs Wednesday night club nights about twice a month during the summer season at the track at the Domain and has booked the track for club member training on other nights. Members can access equipment from the athletics storage shed and use the clubrooms at the Domain. The club rooms are now well stocked with gym equipment and offer an opportunity for club members to train, relax and socialise next to the track.

Beyond the sport itself, Athletics Tauranga is about connection. Members enjoy being part of a supportive network that values camaraderie as much as competition. Social events, community races, and volunteer opportunities create a strong sense of belonging. You are welcome to come over and check out a club night in summer or a cross country event outing in the winter months. Check out our programme for this season.
